I love and appreciate nature, but that has never been an interesting subject to me when it comes to photography. I have always been drawn to urban and man made scenes with my camera. Besides, during my decades long commercial photography career most of my photos were shot for clients, who almost never needed a nature photo. They wanted a photo of the new paper mill, the new CEO or the new awesome product. So, landscapes and other nature themes have seldom appeared in my camera’s viewfinder.
Recently I took my Fuji GW690III medium format film camera for a nature outing. It was not a long wilderness hike, but a rather comfortable two hour cycling trip to a nearby recreational outdoor area. Two hours including the photography, that is.
I only took a handful of photos of trees and what was around them, but it was strangely rewarding. It was also something I would not do with any of my digital cameras, but with a film camera it felt just the right thing to do. With a film camera it almost felt like the photos did not even matter that much in the and. It was just so nice to be there, set up the camera, compose, meter the light and finally press the shutter. Very satisfying process indeed and a proof, that it’s worth it to try something new.
Please, take a look at the video I made of my outing in the forest.
I’d also like to remind you of our upcoming workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the spring of 2026, from March 30th to April 3rd. We still have a few slots available in this address urbanstreetnarratives.com
It’s going to be a fun five days of photography. Below is a video for more details.
Thanks so much for reading.
